Incident: Explosion / fire onboard

We have learned of an incident involving the vessel HOEGH XIAMEN, a Norwegian International Register, 2010 built, 47,232gt vehicle carrier, while berthed at Jacksonville (Blount Island), Florida, preparing to offload a cargo of cars. The vessel had previously called at Benin and Nigeria.

It is reported that the fire erupted on cargo deck 7 and spread to other cargo deck or decks below. The fire is being treated as a major incident, with deployment of many fire engines and tugs with water cannons. During firefighting operations, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department reported that an explosion had occurred, injuring eight firefighters with an additional firefighter being treated for heat exhaustion.
