NEW CASUALTY - SAM LION

We have learned of an incident involving the vessel “SAM LION”, a 2012 built 31,760gt bulk carrier loaded with 40,050 tonnes of clinker in bulk loaded at Nemrut Bay and bound for Dakar.

The Vessel ran aground in the waters of Santa Catalina island area, experiencing several leaks and unable to re-float using her own power. SAM LION was towed by Salvamento Marítimo to the Poniente dock in Ceuta, where she has been inspected by the Maritime Captaincy to verify the damages. Ballast tanks were breached and the double hull penetrated. Divers were sent down to check the cracks and evaluate the necessary repairs. In Ceuta, temporary repairs can only be undertaken to enable the ship to sail to a shipyard in Gibraltar or Algeciras. Five Oceans Salvage SA have been engaged under the terms of Lloyd’s Open Form.
