W.E. Cox have learned of an incident involving the KAPPA, a Turkey Flag, 9,940GT, 1,118TEU, fully cellular containership, which suffered an engine failure and steering malfunction causing her to run aground near Yenikoy, Turkey on 27th April 2026, whilst enroute from Novorossiysk, Russia to Izmit, Turkey.
It is understood that the grounding of the KAPPA temporarily suspended marine traffic in the Istanbul Strait. Following assistance via local authorities, the KAPPA was refloated and anchored in Yesilkoy on 28th April 2026.
The KAPPA is owned by Akkon Gemi Isletmeciligi AS and managed by Mefa Deniz Acenteligi Isletmesi Sanayi ve Ticaret AS. She calls at various ports in Turkey and Russia.
As a result of this casualty, cargo deliveries may be delayed, with possible cargo loss and damage. The situation may also give rise to General Average that will require Cargo interests to provide General Average security prior to cargo being released at destination.
