W.E. Cox have learnt of an incident involving the CMA CGM PETRA, a French Flag, 74,739GT, 272m, 8,048TEU 2024 built, fully cellular containership, enroute from Singapore to Lamu, Kenya, which suffered a fire in her cargo hold whilst transiting the Strait of Malacca, Malaysia on 23rd August 2026.
We understand that professional salvors (at SMIT Salvage) were appointed on commercial terms to assist with firefighting and salvage operations. Fortunately, no injuries or pollution were reported.
We also understand that the owners of the vessel will likely declare General Average and that Albatross Adjusters Limited have been appointed as the average adjusters.
Our local cargo surveyors contacts have confirmed that at least 450 containers are currently being discharged for inspection at Port Klang.
The CMA CGM PETRA is owned by Petra 8190 Bail 10 SAS and operated by Credit Industriel et Commercial SA (CIC). She was operating in CMA CGM’s KILIMA service via Colombo, Lamu, Mombasa and Dar es Salaam.
As a result of this casualty, cargo deliveries may be delayed, with possible cargo loss and damage. The situation may likely give rise to General Average that will require Cargo interests to provide General Average security prior to cargo being released at destination.
