Casualty Update – HMM PLATINUM – Fire – LOF Salvage, GA Likely

Casualty Update - HMM PLATINUM - Fire – LOF Salvage, GA Likely

Incident Date:    Late September or early October 2026

Vessel:                 HMM PLATINUM

Type:                   Fully Cellular Containership

Incident:             Fire – LOF Salvage, GA likely

IMO No.:            9637155

Further to our initial advice regarding a fire on board the HMM PLATINUM, a Liberia Flag, 52,467GT, 5,593TEU, 2013 built, fully cellular containership, we understand that she is carrying around 2,300 containers and that damages are likely to be significant.

We also understand that professional Salvors (at SMIT) have been engaged on LOF terms and that GA will likely be declared.

The HMM PLATINUM is currently searching for a port of refuge other than Durban (as previously mentioned) – perhaps Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha).

Given the above, Cargo interests will need to provide Salvage Security (and likely GA Security) prior to cargo being onshipped and/or released at destination.
