Incident: Collapse of stow & Containers overboard
Following our previous Casualty Advices, operators and managers of ONE APUS have issued a further situation update (see below), advising that an estimated 1,816 containers have been lost overboard and that the Vessel has now berthed in Kobe for a safety inspection prior to surveyors being allowed on board.
At present, GA has not been declared but we understand that owners are considering the possibility. In the meantime, W E Cox Claims Group remain in contact with Vessel interests and have received numerous instructions from cargo interests. As such, we have set up a dedicated Global team within our Survey, Claims and Subrogation departments to maintain 24 hour a day control over the incident, including collating information, ensuring local attendance for surveys, undertaking salvage sales, providing Guarantees (if required) and commencing recovery action.

“Chidori Ship Holding LLC as owners and NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd as managers of the container vessel ONE Apus (IMO# 9806079) can confirm that the ship is now safely berthed in the Port of Kobe after losing 1,816 containers overboard when it encountered severe weather on Monday, November 30, 2020.
A full safety inspection of the vessel and its remaining cargo will now take place with the assistance of local emergency services to ensure that there is no threat to people or the environment posed by the dislodged and damaged containers that remain on deck.
Once the vessel and cargo are declared safe, surveyors from the various stakeholders will make their initial assessments whilst stowage planners and stevedores formulate and implement a plan to ensure the safe removal of the remaining units. Then, a thorough evaluation will be made on the exact number and type of containers that have been lost or damaged and damage to the vessel.
We are liaising with the JRCC in Honolulu, who are continuing to broadcast safety messages to marine traffic about the lost containers and sightings. A full investigation is being conducted into this incident in conjunction with the Flag State and the relevant maritime authorities.
