COLOMBO EXPRESS / MAERSK TANJONG

We have learned of a new incident involving the vessels COLOMBO EXPRESS and MAERSK TANJONG, which suffered a collision in the Suez Canal off Port Said.

COLOMBO EXPRESS is a German flag, 2005 built, 93,750gt fully cellular containership, on a voyage from European ports to Hong Kong / China, calling also at Egypt.

MAERSK TANJONG is a Singapore flag, 2007 built, 94,193gt fully cellular containership, on a voyage from European ports to Jeddah.

It is reported that the incident occurred when the MAERSK TANJONG was clearing the Suez Canal Container terminal to join the second convoy, whilst the COLOMBO EXPRESS was already proceeding through the convoy at the same point.

The Colombo Express lost three containers overboard and suffered a 20 m dent to its port side.

The accident “severely interrupted” a second southbound convoy and northbound convoy was also expected to be delayed.
