W.E. Cox have been appointed by Cargo interests following an incident involving the EPAMINONDAS, a Liberia flag, 80,942GT, 6,690TEU, fully cellular containership vessel. The EPAMINONDAS was attacked by an Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) gunboat and then boarded northeast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz on 22nd April 2026.
It is understood that the EPAMINONDAS suffered extensive damage to the bridge, however, it has been reported that all crew members are safe.
We further understand that the EPAMINONDAS is likely enroute to Bandar Abbas, Iran, where previously seized vessels have been taken.
The EPAMINONDAS is owned by Kalmar Maritime LLC and operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC). She trades between various countries in MSC’s Indusa service route.
As a result of this casualty, cargo delivery may be delayed with the potential for cargo loss and damage or, in some cases, cargo may not be delivered at all. The situation may also give rise to General Average that will require Cargo interests to provide General Average security prior to cargo being released at destination.
