W.E. Cox have been appointed by Cargo Interests following an incident involving the MAERSK LANCO, a Denmark Flag, 99,792GT, 299.9m, 2013 built, fully cellular containership, enroute from Santos, Brazil to Morocco, which suffered a fire (suspected to have originated in the engine room) about 170 miles off the coast of Brazil on 4th September 2026.
We understand that nearby vessels were diverted to assist the 26 crew members on board the MAERSK LANCO.
We also understand that the owners of the vessel will likely declare General Average.
The MAERSK LANCO is owned and operated by Maersk A/S. She has been operating in the NEOSAMBA / SAFRAN1 loop which connects Northern Europe and/or the Mediterranean with the East Coast of South America.
As a result of this casualty, cargo deliveries may be delayed, with possible cargo loss and damage. The situation may also give rise to General Average that will require Cargo interests to provide General Average security prior to cargo being released at destination.
