W.E. Cox have learnt of an incident involving the MARIE MAERSK, a Denmark flag, 194,849GT, 18,270TEU fully cellular containership. The MARIE MAERSK was enroute from Rotterdam, Netherlands to Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia when she suffered a fire whilst sailing near the coast of Liberia on 13th August 2025.
It is understood that Salvors at SMIT have been engaged to assist the MARIE MAERSK and that the fire is under control but the extent of its impact has yet to be confirmed. Fortunately, all crew members are safe.
The MARIE MAERSK has been diverted to Greenville Anchorage, Liberia for assistance and monitoring via local authorities.
It is understood that the MARIE MAERSK is owned, managed and operated by Maersk A/S. She trades along the Asia–Europe AE4 service route.
As a result of this casualty, cargo deliveries will likely be delayed, with potentially significant cargo loss and damage. As the situation appears to involve Salvage and may also give rise to General Average, Cargo interests will likely be required to provide Salvage and/or General Average Security prior to cargo being released at destination.
