IMO No.:             9289910

Incident:             Fire

W.E. Cox have learned of an incident involving the MORNING MIDAS, a Liberian Flag, 46,800GT, 183m, vehicle carrier, which reported a fire on 3 June 2025 whilst sailing from Yantai, China to Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico and laden with 3,000 vehicles, of which, 800 are electric.

We understand that the vessel is currently near Tanaga Bay, Alaska and that the U.S. Coast Guard is responding to her with aircrews and a cutter ship. A tug has also been deployed to assist with both salvage and firefighting operations. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported and the crew have been evacuated via a lifeboat.

We further understand that the MORNING MIDAS is owned by Hawthorn Navigation Incorporated and is managed by Zodiac Maritime Limited. She trades in China, Mexico, South Korea and the USA.

As a result of this casualty, cargo deliveries will likely be delayed, with significant cargo loss and damage. As the situation appears to involve Salvage and may also give rise to General Average, Cargo interests will likely be required to provide Salvage and/or General Average Security prior to cargo being released at destination.
