New Casualty – MSC ELAINE – Aground

New Casualty - MSC ELAINE - Aground

Incident Date:    9th January 2023

Vessel:                MSC ELAINE

IMO No.              9393321

Type:                   Fully Cellular Containership

Incident:             Grounding

We have learned of an incident involving the vessel MSC ELAINE, a Panama flag, 95,681gt, 2009 built, fully cellular containership, which ran aground whilst departing Gioia Tauro, Italy, 9th January 2023.

The fully cellular container vessel with a capacity of 8,562teu is operated by MSC on its Extra Vessels Service and had previously called at Ports in the USA and was departing for the Middle East via Malta when she ran aground on the southern breakwater tip.

It is understood that the stranded vessel has blocked all harbour traffic and that multiple tugs are on scene. It is likely that Professional Salvors will be required before re-floating attempts are made.

As a result of this incident it is highly likely that there will be delays to cargo delivery and cargo owners will be required to provide Salvage Security before delivery of cargo.
