New Casualty - PUMBA - ENGINE ROOM FIRE

W.E. Cox have learnt of an incident involving the PUMBA, a Liberian flag, 54,214GT, 5,060TEU fully cellular containership vessel. The PUMBA was enroute from Port Said Roads, Egypt to Qingdao, China when a fire broke out in her engine room about 8nm off Ras Ghareb, Egypt on 29th July 2025 whilst sailing near an offshore oil platform.
Fortunately, and with the assistance of local authorities and about four tugboats, the fire was extinguished with no casualties. It is understood that the vessel has been towed to a secure anchorage area away from navigation routes and operational zones.
The PUMBA is owned by Pumbaa Shipping Incorporated, managed by Draco Buren Shipping Private Limited and operated by Sea Lead Shipping Private Limited. She trades between Egypt, Turkey, Malaysia, China, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
As a result of this casualty, cargo deliveries will likely be delayed. The situation may also give rise to General Average that will require Cargo interests to provide General Average Security prior to cargo being released at destination.
