New Casualty - Rubymar - Explosion

Incident Date:    18th February 2024

Vessel:                 Rubymar

IMO No.             9138898

Type:                  Bulk Carrier

Incident:            Explosion

We have learned of an incident involving the vessel RUBYMAR, a Belize flag, 19420 gt, 1997 built, bulk carrier which experienced an explosion and sustained damage in the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb, 35 nautical miles south of Al Mukha, Yemen. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Organization (UKMTO) reported the incident and a spokesman for the Houthi group claimed responsibility for the attack. UKMTO reportedly advised that the crew had abandoned vessel and that unnamed military responders were on scene assisting. The vessel had previously called at UAE, Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka.

The bulk carrier is operated by GMZ Ship Management Co and is entered with British Marine for Protection and Indemnity purposes. As a result of this incident it is highly likely that there will be delays to cargo delivery and cargo owners might be required to provide securities before delivery of cargo.
