New Casualty - MAERSK CHATTOGRAM collision with HR TURAG

W.E. Cox have learned of an incident involving the MAERSK CHATTOGRAM, a Singapore Flag, 31,649GT, 2,548TEU, 2016 built, fully cellular containership, which collided with the HR TURAG, a Bangladesh flag, 14,063GT, 1,206TEU, 1999 built, fully cellular containership, whilst enroute to the outer anchorage area at Chittagong, Bangladesh on 1st May 2026.

It is understood that at the time of the collision the vessels were carrying cargo imported from Singapore, with the MAERSK CHATTOGRAM carrying 1,878 containers and HR TURAG carrying 749 containers.

Local authorities assisted with bringing both the MAERSK CHATTOGRAM and HR TURAG to berth on 3rd May, with each vessel having been escorted by three tugboats. Cargo discharge operations are ongoing on the MAERSK CHATTOGRAM and the HR TURAG is expected to set sail later today.

The MAERSK CHATTOGRAM is managed and operated by Maersk A/S. She operates on Maersk’s South China-Southeast Asia-Bangladesh (SH1) feeder service.

The HR TURAG is owned by HR Lines Limited and managed by Karnaphuli Maritime Limited. She calls at various ports along the Bangladesh-Southeast Asia trade route.

As a result of this casualty, cargo deliveries may be delayed, with possible cargo loss and damage. The situation may also give rise to General Average that will require Cargo interests to provide General Average security prior to cargo being released at destination.
