W.E. Cox have been appointed by Cargo interests following an incident on the STRATFORD, a Liberian flag, 91,649GT, 8,533TEU fully cellular containership. The STRATFORD was enroute from Shenzen, China to Vietnam when she suffered a fire in the South China Sea about 190nm off Yongshu Reef, Nansha, China on 28th July 2025.

Apparently four containers caught fire and were subsequently extinguished on 30th July, following the engagement of firefighting tugs on commercial terms and assistance from local authorities. Fortunately, all 25 crew members were saved.

The owners of STRATFORD have declared General Average and appointed Groninger Welker Janssen as the GA Adjusters. The STRATFORD recommenced her voyage to Vietnam and is currently nearing Van Phong Anchorage.

It is understood that the STRATFORD is owned by Deoship Schiffahrtsgesellschaft mbH & Company KG and chartered by OOCL. She trades between China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Singapore and India.

As a result of this casualty, cargo deliveries will likely be delayed, with possible cargo loss and damage. As the situation has given rise to General Average, Cargo interests will be required to provide General Average Security prior to cargo being released at destination.
